CHAPTER 20

“It worked,” Cate repeated as she pinched her eyebrows together. The future memory danced across her mind.

Anna clapped her hands together with a grin. “Catherine! That’s wonderful! And you could see the memory clearly?”

Cate matched her expression. “I did. Yes, crystal clear. Like I was standing right there.”

“That is wonderful. Excellent progress.”

Cate bit her lower lip as she reflected on the future memory she’d seen. Her forehead crinkled. “Are they real?”

Anna tilted her head. “What do you mean?”

“Are the future memories definitely going to happen?”

“Oh, yes.”

“No way to avoid them?”

Anna narrowed her eyes at Cate. “I’m growing concerned this happy future memory was not quite so happy.”

Cate chuckled. “Oh, no, it seemed very happy, but…I’m just curious to know how sure they are. Could my brain create something that won’t happen? Has that ever happened to you? I want to know more for the bad ones.”

“Oh, yes. Can your brain mislead you? Yes, certainly, but that’s usually due to misreading the information you’re given. You’re fed things not to avoid them but to prepare to handle them in the best way possible. However, perhaps you witness your friend crying and interpret it as your friend being harmed when really she is crying happy tears because she is with child.”

Cate sucked in a breath as she considered it. “I see. Okay. I’m ready to try the bracelet.”

“Catherine! You can’t.”

“I can. I succeeded.”

“Once. You succeeded once. You need more practice and more patience.”

“But–“

The door to her suite burst open, and Marcus strode inside. “Good morning, Catherine. What does Mother have you doing that has your heart rate up?” He kissed her cheek before leaning on the bed to await her response.

“We are practicing,” Anna said, waving the rose at him before she returned it to its glass case.

“And?” Marcus asked, directing the question to Cate.

“And it worked!” she exclaimed with a grin. She flicked her gaze up to him and raised her shoulders.

Marcus arched an eyebrow at her, smiling. “Excellent work, dear.”

Anna patted her hand. “She did so well. And so quickly. You are an excellent pupil, Catherine.”

“I want to try the bracelet again, but–“

“No,” Marcus and Anna said simultaneously.

Cate’s shoulders slumped as she flicked her gaze between them. “This is ridiculous. I made progress.”

“And you are still learning. You managed to make sense of a happy future memory. The bracelet will be very different,” Anna said.

“I will never learn how to tame the bad ones if I don’t try.”

Anna grabbed Cate’s hand and rubbed it as she shifted her gaze to Marcus. “Oh, Marcus, I do like her.”

“As do I.”

Cate tapped her foot in the air as she puckered her lips. “I appreciate how much you both like me, but I still think I should try the bracelet.”

“Tell you what, dear. You try the rose again in a bit. If you can easily focus on another future memory, I’ll let you try the bracelet this evening.” She held up a finger. “Just once.”

Cate tugged back one corner of her lips and crinkled her nose.
